RHODE ISLAND RED PURE BREED LARGE FOWL.

UTILITY STRAIN.

These birds are lighter than the chocolate brown colour of the old fashioned large fowl. The Cockerel is the Dark Chocolate colour but he wouldn`t stand still long enough to be in the photo.  I will try to get one uploaded soon.

The hens grow into a large size bird, which needs a fair amount of room, a lot chunkier than the Hybrid brown hens which are so popular for the amount of eggs they lay. These birds are on a par with the production of eggs, they will lay 280-300 eggs in the first year.  A good size egg averging 63-65 grams. as the bird gets older the egg gets bigger.

Average life span of a RHode Island Red is between 6 and 8 years in our experience, they lay  prolifically for the first 2 years then lay less in the third year. In the fourth year they lay when they feel like it as most older birds do.
